Pilates is a type of exercise routine that helps to build strength, flexibility, and stability. It is usually done on a yoga mat, involving putting the body in weird shapes and positions that stretch the muscles and often combining this with slow, repetitive movements. It helps to develop the body by focusing on the powerhouse muscles and encouraging deep, conscious breathing to build core strength.
The Pilates method was invented in 1920 by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates. He developed it as an injury-recovery routine for dancers and originally called it “contrology.” Constant dancing can stress the muscles, making a dancer more prone to injuries.
Although initially created for dancers, Pilates has proved remarkably useful for a wide range of people, as all individuals are, one way or the other, prone to repetitive motion injuries. Not only does it alleviate pains, but it can also help you to develop a better posture and balance in your body and contribute to your general health.
